Obituary for June E. Johnson-Wolff (Deeb)

Johnson-Wolff, June Elizabeth (Deeb) of West Newton, a Psychotherapist and Educator, died Friday, December 15, 2017, at her home, surrounded by family.

Born in Norwood she graduated from Norwood High School and received her BS and MS in Nursing Ed. from BU. She earned her CS in Community Mental Health from Harvard Medical School and her PHD in Counseling Psychology from BC.

As a therapist June was respected for her special skills in helping women from emotionally traumatized backgrounds gain pride and self confidence which enabled them to form healthier and happier relationships. In 2004 she found a new passion working with Vietnamese immigrants at the Kit Clark Senior Center. She spent decades pushing against the Mental Health Establishment in order to open Community Mental Health Centers in all the neighborhoods of Boston. As a teacher, June spent much of her career training student nurses in psychiatric nursing, starting at Boston State Hospital, and continuing throughout her clinical career and later developed programs for post-baccalaureate nurses in community mental health. If you were a student, her door was always open. She was a founding member of Nurses NOW, a member of the Brookline Feminist Counseling Group, and a member of American Orthopsychiatric Association among many other professional activities.

She was a voracious reader and enjoyed traveling, theater, a variety of music, and most especially the Red Sox. One of the happiest days of her life was October 27, 2004 when the Sox won the World Series for the first time since 1918. June spent parts of each summer at her home in Wellfleet.

Wife of the late Robert S Johnson, Jr, MD and wife for the past 47 years of Richard Wolff, MD. sister of the late Frederick Deeb, Dorothy Pollack, and Barbara Gilbert, she is survived by her husband, her son, Robert S Johnson and his wife, Katherine Alford, her grandson, Asher Johnson, her sisters Marion Redonnet of Amherst, and Marcia Deeb Shapiro and her husband Jeffrey Shapiro of Sharon. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held on Tues, Dec. 19, at 10 AM in the First Baptist Church in Newton, 848 Beacon St., Newton Centre. Internment to follow at Highland Cemetery, 320 Winter Street, Norwood MA. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Mass Audubon (https://www.massaudubon.org/get-involved/ways-to-give) or St Jude Children’s Research Hospital https://shop.stjude.org/GiftCatalog/donation.do?cID=14262&pID=24671&sc_icid=wtg-lz-donatenow
