Janet, E. Flaherty, RN of Wellesley, 91, passed on Saturday morning, October 22, at Massachusetts General Hospital following a gradual decline in health with her children by her side. Janet was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Dr. Edmund L. Flaherty, in 1994. She was the devoted mother of Debra Surner, of Wellesley and son David Flaherty of Wayland. She also leaves her grandson Stephen Flaherty of Alhambra, CA and a brother Bruce and his wife, Norma, of Florida as well as many nieces and nephews. After graduating from the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Nursing Program in 1947, she worked as an RN in its pediatric unit for a number of years. When she later became a mother, she chose to remain a homemaker until in the early 1970’s when she enlisted in a nursing refresher training program. Janet then began working part-time at Boston College Health Services where she retired in June of 1992 as the Head Nurse of University Health Services, an environment from which she derived much contentment for having provided care to countless students over numerous years.
A former long-time member of Woodland Golf Club in Auburndale, Janet enjoyed many interests including golf. Following her retirement, she was able to devote more time pursuing other interests including bridge and being an avid reader and sports fan, closely following the Boston Red Sox, Boston College Football and the New England Patriots which provided her with many hours of enjoyment.
