Obituary for A. Richard Hersum

A. Richard Hersum, age 92, passed away peacefully in his home at Juno Beach, Florida on Saturday March 23rd. Richard (Dick) was born on November 27th, 1931 to his mother, Blanche (Olsted) Hersum and his father, Harry, in Newton Massachusetts.

Dick graduated from Northeastern University in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree. While at Northeastern he worked at Raytheon’s Power Tube division.

After graduating, Dick went into the Army Signal Corp. From 1956 to 1959, he was stationed at Fort Huachuca in Arizona as a 1st Lieutenant in the 505 Signal Group where he was Assistant Adjutant and Personnel Officer. He was in charge of personnel acquisition, placement and administration for three signal battalions (2,300 men). It was at Fort Huachuca that he met and married his wife Louise. His assignments included Communication Center and Induction Officer, Atomic Energy Commission in Nevada where he had Top Secret/ Cryptographic clearance and participated in atomic testing.

From 1961 to 1966, Dick was Manager of Advertising and Personnel at General Fittings Corporation in East Greenwich, RI. From 1967 to 1970 he was Corporate Director of Advertising and Public Relations at Transitron Electronic Corporation, a semiconductor manufacturer in Wakefield, MA.

From 1971 until 2016, Dick was Chairman and CEO of Marketing Assistance, Inc, a full service marketing communications firm, whose clients included divisions of The Timken Company and Colgate Palmolive as well as the Boston Celtics, Astra Zeneca, Philips Medical and many others. He was also a lecturer at MIT’s Sloan School of Management.

Dick enjoyed playing golf at the Weston Golf Club where he was a member. He was also very active in political and volunteer activities, founding and running the Association of Massachusetts Republican Town and City Chairmen (AMRC), and Chairman of the Weston Republican Town Committee. Dick was a Director of several non-profits including Massachusetts Eye Research Institute, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the Gifford School where he was also Treasurer, and Mass Brain Injury Association.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Louise (Timko) Hersum, sons Mark, Eric and John Hersum, daughter in laws Karen and Mariana, grandchildren, Aaron, Julia, Taber, Alek, Ian, Mikkel and Henry, a great grandchild Kaden and nephews Douglas, Robert and Jeffrey Vezina and Matthew MacPherson. Dick was pre-deceased by his beloved sister June Marilyn (Hersum) Vezina who passed at age 50.

A private graveside service will be held next week for immediate family. Funeral service and reception will be held for Dick in the coming weeks. In lieu of sending flowers, donations to the Mass General-Brigham Hospital Transplant Research Center are appreciated.
