Obituary for Marquis Anthony Lockett, Sr.

Marquis Anthony Lockett, Sr. (Mark) was born on November 17, 1964. He was a “Grady baby,” born at Atlanta Grady Hospital to Ernestine and William Lockett.

Mark started his Christian education at East Point First Mallalieu United Methodist Church in East Point, GA. This ingrained in him a willingness to dedicate himself to the work of the church. He served as an acolyte at First AME Church of Los Angeles for a number of years, later becoming a member of Usher Board #4. In later years, he continued his service to the Lord, serving in various capacities at Myrtle Baptist Church as an usher, a member of the Trustee Board as well as a member of the Men’s Choir.

Mark was educated in Los Angeles area schools, graduating from Hamilton High School in 1982. He continued his studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, receiving his undergraduate degree in biology. He did further study, receiving his MBA from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.

Mark’s employment was diverse. He served as a science teacher at El Sereno Middle School in Los Angeles, prior to having a successful career in the Pharmaceutical/Biotech industry. He was employed by great companies, such as Johnson and Johnson, Biogen, and Sanofi. In addition to his regular employment, Mark loved teaching, becoming an adjunct professor at Babson College.

Mark met his wife, Cassandra, when they served on Usher Board #4 at First AME Church. After a brief courtship, they were united in holy matrimony on June 29, 1991. To this union, two children were born: a son, Marquis II and a daughter, Gabrielle.

Those who knew Mark knew that he was an avid sports fan. He was always working at lowering his golf handicap, cheering for his beloved Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Lakers. Mark was a proud Alpha man. In spring of 1983, he was inducted into the Mu Kappa chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. In Massachusetts, he served the organization in several capacities, including president of the Epsilon Gamma Lambda chapter. In recent years, Mark enjoyed being a member of the Boston Chapter of The National Association of Guardsmen.

Mark is survived by his wife of thirty-two years, Cassandra Lockett and his devoted children, Marquis Lockett of Hyde Park, MA and Gabrielle Lockett of Dover, MA; his parents, Dave and Ernestine Campbell of West Covina, CA; his uncle, Wallace McMichael (Joyce) of Chester, VA; and aunt, Gloria Billingslea of West Seneca, NY; in-laws, the Woods family of Carson, CA; numerous cousins and many beloved friends.

In lieu of flowers, scholarship donations are requested in memory of Mark Lockett to the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Charitable Arm of the Epsilon Gamma Lambda chapter, the Edward W. Brooke, III Educational Foundation.
