Obituary for Marie G. Carten

Marie G. Carten, 67, of Belmont, MA (formerly of Newton), passed away at home, surrounded by her siblings, on May 16, 2023, after a valiant 3-year struggle with Glioblastoma.

Known for her warmth, humor, kindness and generosity, Marie led a life of caring for others both as a Nurse/Nurse Practitioner and in her personal life. She was a graduate of Fairfield University and the University of California San Francisco. She worked in several healthcare settings in Massachusetts including Beth Israel Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital & Research Clinic and Tufts Medical Center. She was also a member of VNA Care's Maternal-Child team and Palliative Care-Hospice team. She was understated in her accomplishments and made a lasting impact on her patients' lives.

Marie will be remembered for her generous spirit, loving heart, dry wit and zest for life. She entertained family and friends with many tales of adventure including skiing Tuckerman's Ravine and learning to sail in Boston Harbor. She was admired for her fashionable style and impeccable taste and had the unique knack for finding the perfect greeting card for every occasion. She remained close with friends from every stage of her life, from elementary school through college and beyond.

Marie is survived by her siblings Ann Verrilli (John), Margaret Carten (Robert Crosby), Andrew Carten (Maria), Robert Carten (Laura), Mary Carten (Ronald Gehrke), Janice Steinberg (David) and her beloved dog, Luna. She is survived by nine nieces and nephews who remember many special trips and outings with her, as well as three grandnieces. She was preceded in death by her father, Andrew S. Carten Jr., mother, Helen M. Carten, and brother, Paul Carten.

Marie also leaves behind a wide circle of devoted friends. She will be deeply missed.

A Celebration of Life will be planned in honor of Marie. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Newton Athletes Unlimited, to honor her brother Paul, newtonathletesunlimited.org, or to the charity of your choice.
