Obituary for Elizabeth Moss Phillips

Elizabeth Moss Phillips, 89, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, died on March 22, 2023.
She was born on August 15, 1933, to Margaret Dewey Moss and James Whitson Moss.

“Libby”, as she was known to her friends, grew up in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts and
attended The Chestnut Hill School, Winsor School and graduated from The Masters School
(then known as Dobbs). She made her debut at the Debutante Cotillion in Boston before
matriculating at and graduating from Colby Junior College, now known as Colby-Sawyer
College.

While at Colby Jr College, Libby was introduced to Roscoe Wendell Phillips, jr. by a mutual
friend and they were married in June of 1955. They spent a year in Danville, California and
Wendell completed his active duty in the United States Air Force as a Captain. Their first
Child was born there. They returned to the Boston area, settling in Canton, Massachusetts.

While Wendell established his architectural career with Kent Kruse and Partners and opened
his own firm, R. Wendell Phillips, jr. and Associates, Libby was active in the Vincent Club of
Boston and The Junior League of Boston. She and Wendell added three more
children to their family. They moved to Dedham, Massachusetts to a home designed by
Wendell and Libby in 1969. Libby and Wendell were active members of St Paul’s Episcopal
Church in Dedham and Libby joined the Dedham Choral Society as a Soprano.

After raising their children, Libby and Wendell moved to New London, New Hampshire in the
early 1990s. Lifelong animal lovers, Libby and Wendell spent many years as Board Members of
Caring Animal Partners which they helped establish shortly after moving to New Hampshire.
Libby and Wendell also joined St. Andrews Episcopal Church in New London, NH where Libby
was a member of the church choir for many years. She was also an alumnae volunteer at Colby-
Sawyer College.

After Wendell died in 2018, Libby moved to an assisted living facility in Framingham,
Massachusetts then to a new assisted living facility in Medway, Massachusetts in early 2022.
She was also predeceased by their son, Roscoe Wendell Phillips, III, who died in October of
1998. She is survived by her son, James Moss Phillips (Barbara) of Norfolk, Massachusetts,
Eleanor Phillips Cyr of Seattle, Washington, and Margaret Phillips Goeller (John) of Holliston,
Massachusetts and her grandchildren Elizabeth Meyers (Cyr) Grim (Matthew) of Seattle,
Washington, Randall Phillips Cyr of Bothell, Washington, Madeline Adele Phillips of New York,
New York, Jessica Goeller Wells (Dan) of Leicester, Massachusetts, Peter Phillips Goeller of
Leominster, Massachusetts.

A memorial service for Libby will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in New London, New
Hampshire on April 22, 2023, at 2 o’clock p.m. An Internment service will be held on April 24,
2023 at 2 o’clock p.m., at Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Mary Ann Morse at Heritage, Whitney Place, Newton-
Wellesley Hospital and the Milford Regional Medical Center for their compassion and care
shown to Libby during her final years.
