Obituary for Paul Murphy

Paul Edward Murphy, 87, passed away with family by his side on April 7, 2023. Born in Cambridge, he was the youngest of John and Ellen (Powers) Murphy’s seven children. A graduate of Boston College High School, he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in engineering from Northeastern University. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Paul worked for many years as an engineer for Honeywell and spent his final working years as a consultant at MITRE Corporation.

Paul was a resident of Wellesley for over fifty years, where he was a communicant at St. John’s Catholic Church. Paul enjoyed several avocations, including gardening both flowers and vegetables and bee keeping. His award-winning honey mead was very popular with his friends and family. He was an avid skeet and trap shooter and a long-time member of the Fin Fur and Feather Club in Millis. His true passion was designing and building furniture. He created many tables, cabinets, beds, carvings and other decorative items, and got immense joy from giving them to family members. His artistic side was also displayed in the shaker-style wooden boxes and baskets he crafted in his workshop, which are treasured by his family members.

Paul is survived by his wife and best friend for over sixty years, Ann (Bacon) Murphy. He is also survived by his son Thomas and his wife Mary and their sons Avery and John of Oro Valley, AZ, daughter Laura Heffernan and her children Gregory, Erica and Lindsay of Wellesley, and daughter Janet and her husband William Vargas and their daughters Sara and Ally of Wellesley.
