Obituary for Annette Kathleen Hyness Eng (Chang)

Annette Kathleen Hyness Chang Eng passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and loved ones on March 23, 2023. Born in Kingston, Jamaica on October 11, 1936, Annette was the fourth of fifteen children of Percy and Alice Chang. Her father founded and operated Jamaica’s first supermarket, Chang’s Emporium, 86 Halfway Tree Road, Kingston.


Annette attended Holy Childhood School, Suthermere Preparatory School, Saint Andrew High School for Girls. She was the first in her family to leave for higher education in the United States, She attended Nazareth College, Kentucky before graduating from Fordham University. In New York City, she met Richard Shen Eng whom she married in Jamaica in 1958. The couple moved to Jackson Heights, Queens and Old Bethpage Long Island, before settling in Newton Massachusetts. Annette received her masters degree from LIU Post (C.W. Post) and doctorate from Boston University.


Annette started her teaching career right after high school helping children at Holy Childhood School in Jamaica. She taught years later at Taukomas Elementary School in Long Island before spending an extended 36 years at Cambridge Public Schools System. Besides teaching children, Annette’s passions included helping homeless cats and dogs, and singing Broadway musical hits and religious hymns. She grew roses and loved photography. Annette was a devout Catholic and an active member of the Sacred Heart Church community.


Annette was tenacious in her pursuit of learning, charitable to others less fortunate, indomitable in leading her family, and radiant in her lovely smile. Annette is survived by her three children, Victor, Douglas and Mona.


Visitation will run 4:30 to 7:30 PM, Friday, March 31 at Burke and Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington St, Weston Newton. Mass is Sacred Heart Church, 1321 Centre St, Newton Centre MA on Saturday April 1 at 12 pm followed by burial at Newton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Massachusetts SPCA - Angell.
