Obituary for Carol Hines Gleason
Carol Hines Gleason passed away on February 16, 2021, at St. Patrick’s Manor in Framingham, MA, from complications of vascular dementia. Formerly of Whitcomb House in Milford, MA. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 29, 1934, her parents were Margaret Galvin Hines and Colonel Paul Henry Hines.
Loving mother of Maryellen Gleason (Kim Ohlemeyer) of Alhambra, CA, Richard Gleason (Diane) of Hopedale, MA, Margaret “Molly” Giordano (Robert) of Mattapoisett, MA, Andrew of Pittsburgh, PA, Peter (Sherry) of Tracy, CA, Carol of Natick, MA, Sarah of Natick, MA, and Michael (Brian Johnston) of Somerset, MA.
Grandmother to Thomas Giordano (Shannon), Michael Giordano, David Giordano, Eliot Ohlemeyer, Jacob Ohlemeyer, Liam Gleason, Catalina Gleason, Paul Gleason, Meghan Gleason, Katie Benotti, and the late Sean Benotti (RyAnn Hall). Great grandmother to Anthony Benotti. Sister of Mary Hines of New York City and the late Margaret Kierstead, Paul Hines, Ann-Marie Blute, Peter Hines, Leo Hines, and John Hines.
Carol is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Carol grew up in West Roxbury and lived for almost forty years in Wellesley Hills, MA. She was a passionate community leader serving as an elected member of the Wellesley Town Meeting, Wellesley Free Library Trustees, and numerous political causes as a life-long Democrat. Carol was frequently seen driving around Wellesley with many of her eight children in her signature red Volkswagen bus en route to adventures she devised. Carol loved the Mid-Coast of Maine and looked forward to spending part of her summer in Spruce Head with a good book and friends by her side. One of her greatest pleasures was the trips she planned for her grandchildren including a Red Sox game in Ontario, Canada, and a history tour of the Beaches
of Normandy.
She had a large circle of friends spanning decades and from her various interests, including St. Aidan’s High School “club,” St. John’s Book Club, the Boston Symphony, Boston College alumni, tennis, Community Boating, New England Patriots, and the Boston College Eagles. One notable highlight was her trip to St, Louis, MO, in 2004 to see the Red Sox win the World Series.
She was previously married to the late Richard ‘Dick” Gleason of Wellesley.
Carol graduated from Boston College in 1956 as part of the first class of women and was proud to be a lifelong educator having taught the Fourth Grade in the Dedham Public Schools and as a substitute teacher in the Wellesley Public Schools. After earning a Master of Education Degree from Boston University in English as Second Language (ESL), Carol taught ESL for the Jewish Vocational Services in Boston for over a decade.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, private interment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery later this month. A celebration of life mass and reception is planned for Saturday, June 5, 2021, at St. John the Evangelist Church 9 Glen Rd, Wellesley, MA 02481 followed by a reception in her honor.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church or the Wellesley Free Library, 530 Washington Street Wellesley, MA 02482. Carol will be missed by many for her kind spirit and generous heart. Peace be with you, Carol, mom, Grammy Gleason.
