Obituary for Florence D. Halloran

Mrs. Florence Dorothy (Caterino) Halloran of Auburndale, passed peacefully on December 25, 2020 in her home at the age of 97.

Florence (Floss, Flo) was born in Newton on June 2, 1923, and was the daughter of the late Vincenzo and Josephine (Staffenolli) Caterino. She graduated from Newton North High School in 1942. Following graduation, she began her working career at the West Newton Savings Bank. A few years later she joined the family business, Caterino’s Market, located on River Street “Night Caps Corner'' in West Newton where she was responsible for all the business bookkeeping.

On May 7, 1950 she married Paul Francis Halloran whom she met while summering in Marshfield. They made their lifelong home in Auburndale until his death in 1975. Family meant everything to Florence and she will always be remembered as a wonderful wife, devoted mother and proud grandmother and great-grandmother.

She loved her role as a homemaker, the time spent raising her children and summers in Marshfield. She enjoyed cooking many of her family favorite dishes and desserts, especially her homemade raviolis. She was actively involved in her children’s lives, always volunteering as a PTO member, den mother and girl scout leader. Her faith was at the core of who she was and she instilled those values in her family. She was a lifelong parishioner at the Saint Bernard’s Church where she was baptized and married.

She returned to work in her later years at the Newton School Department and in the billing department at Jordan Marsh’s Corporate Office in Auburndale. Upon her retirement, she continued to enjoy her many social activities. She was a member of the Corpus Christi Guild and served on its board for many years. She was a member of a bowling league at Fairway Bowling and enjoyed her weekly card group at the Scandinavian Living Center, as well as attending many bus trips and activities sponsored by the Newton Senior Center and Newton Recreation Department. She had a wonderful sense of humor throughout her life.

Her family is forever grateful for the superior care provided by her caregivers, especially Barbara Wanyana for her constant love and devotion to Florence.

She is survived by her three children, Paul Halloran, Jr. (Mary Ellen) of Barrington, RI, Audrey Moran of Wellesley, MA, Ken Halloran (Karen) of Medway, MA and her eight grandchildren, Kathryn (Ben) Coleman of San Diego, CA and Julia Halloran of Chicago, IL, Caitlin Guigli (Matthew) of Wellesley, Ryan Moran of South Boston and Cara Moran of Charlestown, Patrick Halloran of Quincy, Scott Halloran of Burbank, CA and Jake Halloran of Medway and three great-grandchildren, Grayson, Hunter and Griffin Guigli of Wellesley.

She was predeceased by her brother, John Caterino, and her sister, Helen Maloney. She leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.

May God grant her eternal peace.

Friends and family are welcome to an hour of visitation Saturday, January 2nd from 10-11AM in the Burke & Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington St. West Newton. Due to current restrictions, funeral services will be private.
