Obituary for Nasrollah Parangi
Nasrollah (“Nasser”) Parangi passed away peacefully on December 28, 2019 in his home in Newton, MA at the age of 86. He is survived by his treasured wife, Dorieh, to whom he was married for 63 years. He was loved and cherished by his son, Max and his wife, Nika, his daughter Sareh and her husband, Aria and his daughter Mahsa, and her husband, Joe. He adored his six grandchildren, Aria, Ryan, Nima, Shayan, Ava and Alex. He spent time caring for them and his eyes lit up whenever he saw each one of them.
Nasser had an illustrious life with many adventures. He was born in Mashad, Iran to a large family with four brothers and one sister. He met his wife in the lake and mountain resort town of Urmieh. They married in their 20s and together they built a beautiful life. They started with very little money and lived day-to-day but they both knew one thing, education was paramount.
After graduating from the University of Tehran with a bachelor’s degree in architecture, Nasser’s talent and passion lead him to continue his studies abroad at the world-renowned University of Florence, Italy. With neither Italian language skills nor money, he and his wife worked full-time ceaselessly, to make his doctoral dreams a reality. While others saw obstacles, they saw opportunity.
With his PhD in hand, Nasser returned to Iran where he and his wife set roots raising their three children in a lovely home created with his own unique architectural design. He established a successful and well-respected architectural firm in Tehran. During his architectural career, he designed many hospitals and rehabilitation centers, schools, buildings and homes. As a well-known and revered architect, he was selected to be a member of Iran’s Architecture Pride Worthies Foundation.
Nasser’s growing professional and personal successes were interrupted by the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Thinking about the long-term future of their children, Nasser and his wife left everything behind and emigrated to the US. Once more, Nasser found himself in a new country tackling a new language and building a life with his family from the bottom up.
As his children were growing up, he provided unconditional love and support and served as their role model. His biggest pride was the success of his kids as first-generation immigrants in the US. His son, Max, honored him by following in his footsteps as a successful architect, his daughter, Sareh, a prominent general surgeon and professor, and his daughter, Mahsa, a corporate attorney.
He saw the joy and fun in life, always being the one to host family and friends on any occasion. With his pipe in hand, he could be found telling jokes, smiling and laughing. He was generous, helping many along the way.
A man of many talents, he was an artist painting in all mediums, leaving behind an art collection his children display in their homes and keep close to their hearts. He also loved gardening and did it with meticulous detail. He would landscape his children’s homes with picturesque flowers and fruit trees.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at the Burke & Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington Street, West Newton, MA 02465 from 11:00 to 12:30pm. In lieu of flowers, a tribute donation may be made to the International Rescue Committee or UNICEF.
