Obituary for Patricia Anne Keating (Keenan)

Patricia Anne Keating, beloved wife of James William Keating, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 17, 2018, surrounded by family. A long-time resident of Wellesley Hills, MA, Pat is survived by Jim, her devoted husband of 65 years; her three children, a daughter-in-law and a son-in-law, Alison Keating of New Canaan, CT, Peter and Leslie Keating Cawley of Westport, CT, and Mark and Laurie Bartlett Keating of Weston, MA; and her eight grandchildren, Peter, Geoffrey and Jay Cawley; Cuyler, James and Chase Hedlund; and Grant and Myles Keating. Pat is also survived by her sister Ethel Abbott of Peterborough, NH and ten nieces and nephews, and is predeceased by her sister Mary Schoepfer of Chatham, MA and two of Ethel’s sons.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Pat was the third and youngest child of Ethel Curran Keenan and Peter M. Keenan. Early in Pat’s childhood the Keenan family moved to Queens, NY where Pat met Jim, the love of her life, in first grade. They were married in Queens on September 25, 1952, and moved to Lampasas, Texas, where Jim served in the United States Army at Fort Hood. They moved from Lampasas to Wilmington, Delaware, then to Mountainside, NJ, where Pat attended nearby Keene University, and ultimately to Wellesley Hills where they lived on Bristol Road for 35 years.
Patricia was keenly interested in current events and local, national and international politics. She religiously exercised her right to vote, never missing a state or national election. Her favorite pastimes were gardening, tennis, golf and bridge, especially a game with dear friends in the Wellesley Country Club ladies locker room. She was an avid player who took delight in teaching the conventions of the game to her grandchildren. Pat’s aesthetic sense and deep appreciation for art and music were nurtured by her father, a gifted artist and for many years an editorial cartoonist at The Long Island Press. In addition to Wellesley Country Club, Pat was a member of the Wellesley Assemblies, Postcomers Club and Garden Club. She previously served as President of the Mountainside Newcomers Club. Her greatest passion was for her family and friends. She will be missed by all. The family gives special thanks to the nurturing caregivers and friends at Celtic Angels whose dedication and compassion have been remarkable.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 26 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul Parish, 502 Washington Street, Wellesley, MA 02482. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, May 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Henry A. Burke & Sons Funeral Home, 56 Washington Street, Wellesley Hills.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Down Syndrome Society, 8 E. 41st Street, 8th Floor, NY, NY 10017 or at www.ndss.org
