Obituary for Paul Carten

Paul Carten 48, of Belmont, died peacefully July 27, 2018 at the Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln, MA, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved son of the late Andrew S. and Helen (Murphy) Carten.

Paul was raised in Auburndale, went to Newton public schools and graduated from Watertown High School. He attended The Price Center for many years, participating in job training and working at local businesses. Paul also served as a guest speaker in the early years of the Understanding Handicaps (now Understanding Our Differences) program in Newton’s elementary schools.

A kind, gentle and polite man with a great sense of humor, Paul loved visiting the library, looking at antique cars, watching old black and white movies, and listening to music, especially the “oldies.” He also loved to dance and was a big fan of the Bruins and Red Sox. Paul participated in Special Olympics for many years, winning numerous medals in cross-country skiing and track events. He was active in recreational programs in Newton and Belmont and enjoyed playing basketball and golf, swimming, and bicycle riding. Paul also enjoyed watercolor painting.

Most of all Paul loved his family and they him. Paul is survived and dearly missed by his siblings Ann Verrilli and her husband John of Belmont, Margaret Carten and her husband Robert Crosby of Gloucester, Andrew Carten and his wife Maria of Lawrenceville, NJ, Marie Carten of Belmont, Robert Carten and his wife Laura of Portland, ME, Mary Carten and her husband Ronald Gehrke of San Francisco, CA, and Janice Steinberg and her husband David of Sudbury. Paul is also survived by 9 nieces and nephews: Juliana, Caitlin, Andrew, Michael, Elissa, Drew, Owen, Peter and Melissa.

Family and friends are invited to honor Paul’s life during visiting hours Friday evening, August 3rd from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Burke & Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington St., (Rte. 16), West Newton and on Saturday morning, August 4th at 9:30 am. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, August 4th at 10:30 am at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, 573 Washington St., in Newton. Burial will follow at Holyhood Cemetery in Chestnut Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations in Paul's memory may be made to Beaverbrook STEP, Inc., 85 Main Street, 2nd Floor, Watertown, MA 02472 (beaverbrookstep.org) or to The Price Center, 27 Christina St, Newton, MA 02461 (thepricecenter.org).
