Obituary for Nancy A. Bloom (Espinola)

Nancy A. Bloom (Espinola)
Bloom, Nancy Anna (Espinola), of Newton passed away on April 20, 2018 at the age of 82 after a valiant battle against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Nancy was surrounded by many loved ones and is survived by her five children: Nadine (Craig) Hill of Gainesville, FL, Derek (Lena) of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Glenn (Amy) of Natick, MA, Grant (Gabrielle) of Arlington, MA, and Leigh (James) Cowdrick of Lexington, MA. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Brian and Kevin Hill; Alexander, Jameson, Yana and Mark Bloom; Emily and Sarah Bloom; Julian Bloom; and Johnny Cowdrick. She is survived by her great-granddaughter Kacey Hill and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Nancy was pre-deceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, John Arthur Bloom, her parents Anthony and Jessie (Silva) Espinola and sister Dorothy Bailey.

Born, raised, and educated in Methuen, Massachusetts, Nancy was the Valedictorian of the last graduating class from E. F. Searle’s High School, where she enjoyed being a clarinet player in the marching band. She was a graduate of Lowell State Teachers College and earned a Master’s degree from Worcester State College. Nancy taught for 20 years in the Worcester Public School system as a primary grade teacher in inner city schools. Nancy stopped working for nine years to raise her five children, and then was very pleased to return to full-time work. Following teaching, Nancy greatly enjoyed a second career as a Senior Property Manager Community Builders, Inc. in Boston where she worked for 11 years and acquired additional professional qualifications as a Certified Property Manager. Nancy retired in 1997 to dedicate herself to enjoying the remaining years with John.

Nancy was an active member of St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church and held positions as Eucharistic Minister, member of Finance Committee and member of St. Cecilia’s Cares. She also tutored at the Literacy Center for the Sisters of St. Joseph, teaching English to immigrants and developing many valued friendships.

Nancy was active at Worcester Academy during the years John worked there as teacher and Headmaster. She was twice President of the Thimble Club and oversaw many functions as Headmaster’s wife. Worcester Academy was blessed to have had two dedicated “faculty members” that cared so much about the institution.

Nancy was a very active member of the Lasell Village community making new friends, attending classes. She served as Chair of Food Services Committee, member of Lasell Village Residents Advisory, member of Finance Committee and Building Representative.

John and Nancy were equally astounded by receiving the news in June 2016 that her, until then unidentifiable, symptoms had a label, and it was ALS. Nancy handled the news from that day forward with tremendous courage and dignity and looked forward, in her last days, to reuniting with John. John had given her the gift she treasured most in life, his sincere and profound love.

If John Bloom was the CEO and Judge of the Bloom household, Nancy Bloom was the CFO, COO, Director of HR and Career Coach, Director of Policy and Social Initiatives, Director of Communications, Director of Long and Short-Term Planning, Chief Caregiver, Telephone Switch Board Operator, and Jury capable of controlling decision making by the Judge. Nancy enthusiastically supported family moves, career changes, travel, and all twists and turns of life. Nancy was an avid reader and news watcher.

Nancy’s family are indebted to her many caregivers and aides and share in the grief of all who learn this news of her passing.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 27, 2018 at St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church, 18 Belvidere Street in Boston. Calling hours will be held in the Church beginning at 9:30 AM followed by Mass at 10:30 AM. Internment at Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover is private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Lasell Village Benevolent Fund, Lasell Village, 120 Seminary Avenue, Auburndale, MA 02466 or Mass General Hospital ALS Fund, Krista McCabe, Development Office – Suite 540, 125 Nashua Street, Boston, MA. 02114.
