Howard, Frank Albert 91, of Newton, passed away peacefully on April 2nd. Born in Kansas City, MO., to Merle and Marion Howard, he is survived by his wife of 66 years, Deborah V. Howard, his sister Judith Miller, his daughters Karen Howard, Susan Howard, and Betsy Howard, and their husbands Christopher O’Brien, David Bernstein and Ray Shenusay, as well as six grandsons (one predeceased) and two great-grandchildren. Frank served as a doctor in the US Navy and later moved to Boston to complete his medical training at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. He was in private practice for many years first in Brookline and then in Wellesley. He lived in West Newton for over 55 years with his family in a house still occupied by the extended family. In his retirement, he and his wife Deb traveled extensively, often with the Massachusetts Audubon Society in search of rare birds. He spent his considerable enthusiasm working on medical ethics, advance directives and hospice care. He also worked with the American Chestnut Foundation to reestablish the chestnut tree in New England. A kind soul and always a gentleman, Frank was asking how he could be of help to others even in his last days. The family invites friends to celebrate a life well lived in the Grace Episcopal Church, 76 Eldridge St., Newton, Saturday, June 16 at 2:00 PM. Donations in Frank’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, the Good Shepherd Community Hospice, or the American Chestnut Foundation.
