Obituary for Cynthia M. Alexander (Murphy)

Cynthia Alexander died peacefully on Wednesday, May 10th at her home in Natick, MA. Born May 6, 1926 to Celeste and Frederick Murphy in Boston, MA, she was raised in Massachusetts, where she attended Abington High School. She subsequently earned an associate’s degree from Georgetown Visitation, Washington, D.C. Prior to deploying to Tehran, Iran to begin work for the U.S. Foreign Service, she fell in love, and was married to her husband of fifty-nine years, Henry R. Alexander. They resided in Washington, D.C., London, England, McClean, VA, Rochester, NY, and then moved to Wellesley, MA in 1962, where they raised a family. Cynthia worked in the Wellesley Public Schools system, including many years as the beloved school secretary of Warren School. She subsequently worked in the Wellesley College Art Department as an office administrator. She was active in the Wellesley Women’s Club, Garden Club, Boston Opera Guild, and was a charter member of the Wellesley Sailing Club. Her many interests included knitting, needlepoint, and reading, and she had unique artistic talent in many crafts, including her famous Christmas wreaths. She is survived by her five children H. Richard Alexander, Jr. of Beallsville, MD, Cynthia A. Capwell of Charlotte, NC, Catherine C. Alexander of Arlington, MA, Anna (Molly) A. Tackabery of San Rafael, CA, Frederick J. Alexander of Wellesley, MA and eight grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, May 29, at 11AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 9 Glen Rd., Wellesley. A private interment will be held at a later date. Visiting hours will be held at the Henry J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home, 56 Washington St., WELLESLEY HILLS, Monday, May 29, from 10:00AM to 10:45AM. Donations in memory of Mrs. Alexander may be made to the UMBF-Alexander Research Fund at University of Maryland SOM, 29 S. Greene St., Baltimore, MD 21230.
