COSGROVE, Mary Margaret (Dawson) of Newton and Mattapoisett passed away on October 9th, 2016 after a long illness. She was born on May 22, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY to James and Mary Dawson and was the fourth of their six children. Mary grew up in New Bedford where she attended Holy Family High School in Fairhaven and went on to become a registered nurse after graduating from St. Elizabeth’s in Brighton. As a nurse, Mary met her husband, Joseph, and played matchmaker to her older brothers. Mary lived in Newton for over 40 years, and worked as a real estate broker for much of that time. Mary was a parishioner of St. Bernard’s Parish in West Newton where she volunteered much of her time teaching Religious Education classes. Her favorite past times were her summers in Mattapoisett surrounded by her grandchildren, children, husband and siblings. Mary was the beloved wife of Attorney Joseph G. Cosgrove of Newton for fifty years and a cherished mother to her four children: Maureen Cosgrove (J.J. Zeph) of Bar Harbor, Michael Cosgrove (Tamara) of Newton, MaryBeth Leiphart (David) of Hingham, and Kate Stephens (Charles) of Chicago. She was also the treasured “Gigi” of her grandchildren: Lizzy, Will, Bae, Amanda, Caroline, Reagan, Mary and Charlie. Mary is also survived by her five siblings John Dawson, James Dawson, Kevin Dawson, Kathleen Brett and Janet Liljedahl. Family and friends will gather for a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Bernard Church, 1529 Washington St., West Newton, Thursday, October 13 at 9:00 AM. Visiting hours will be held in the Burke & Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington St., (Rte. 16), West Newton, Wednesday evening from 3:00 - 8:00 PM. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary's memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute www.danafarber.org .
