Patrick J. Hegarty, Jr. of Newton, formerly of Wellesley Hills and Amherst, NH, died Thursday April 7, 2016 at the Stone Institute and Rehabilitation Center in Newton at the age of 100.
Mr. Hegarty was a resident of Newton for 38 years and of Wellesley Hills and Amherst for 62 years. Born in Tyldesley, England, he immigrated to Newton at the age of 5 with his parents Patrick and Kate (McGuiness) Hegarty.
Mr. Hegarty was the New England Sales Representative of the Lord Jeff Knitting Corp for over 30 years and served as president of the New England Men’s and Boy’s Apparel Club. A graduate of Newton High School, he received his sales training in Men’s apparel at Filene’s Department Store in Boston.
As a boy, he caddied at the Woodland Golf Club in Auburndale, and caddied for Babe Ruth, Francis Ouimet and other well-known Boston sports figures. In 1933, he won the Massachusetts Junior Amateur Golf Championship.
Mr. Hegarty was a proud veteran of the US Army having served in WWII as Infantry Unit Commander in the 94 Division 301st Infantry Division known as Patton’s Ghost Corps where he was awarded 4 Bronze Stars and the Combat Infantry Badge.
He was the beloved husband of the late Anne (McCourt), and father to Paul Hegarty and his late wife Karen (Clapp) of Natick, and Anne Hernandez and her husband Dr. Pedro Hernandez of Amarillo, TX. Grandfather of Kim Waters and her husband Jack of Natick, Jeff Hernandez of Amarillo, TX and the late Andrew Hernandez. Great-grandfather of Kyle Hegarty. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Mr. Hegarty was predeceased by his 6 sisters; Della Mayhew, Julia Dunn, Kathleen Davis, Nora Hegarty, May Noonan and Peg Donahue. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, April 12 at 10AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 9 Glen Rd. Wellesley followed by interment in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham. Visiting hours will be Monday evening from 4-7PM in the Henry J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home, 56 Washington St. Wellesley. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Stone Institute, 277 Elliot St. Newton, MA 02464.
