Angelo J. Taranto
Taranto, Angelo J., of Mansfield, formerly of Newton, January 22, 2016. Beloved husband of Anna M. (Renzella) Taranto. Devoted father of Marianne (Taranto) Priante and her late husband William A., Sr. of Bellingham, Jane Marie (Taranto) Lomax and her husband Warry E., III of Medfield, John Albert Taranto and his wife Joan of Burlington and the late Richard Joseph Taranto.
He was the dear brother of the late Angelina (Taranto) Mascia, Giovanna (Taranto) Rando and Maria Grazia Taranto. Loving grandfather of nine: Diane Marie (Priante) Gaughran, William Alan Priante, Jr., Anthony Joseph Priante, Richard Joseph Taranto, Kristina Marie (Taranto) Mentzer, Lauren Nicole (Taranto) Masseur, Sarah Ann (Lomax) Parker, Matthew Christopher Lomax, and Michele Marie Lomax-Kessloff and their spouses.

With the impending birth of twin boys, he was already the doting great-grandfather of sixteen: Brian Christopher Gaughran, Julia Marie Gaughran, Cassandra Frances Priante, Domenic William Priante, Angelina Eva Priante, Annabella Mia Priante, Alicia Marianne Priante, Olivia Rose Taranto, Anna Elizabeth Mentzer, Parker Joseph Masseur, Connor Charles Masseur, Eilis Alice Parker, William Warry Parker, Jenna Brooke Lomax, Ava Reece Lomax, and Camden Luke Kessloff.
Along with his immediate family he leaves his best friend and brother-in-law, Joseph Cappadona, his sister-in-law’s, Catherine Cappadona and Yolanda Santamaria and brother-in-law, Frank Fasano. In addition, he leaves countless nieces, nephews, Godchildren, and friends.
On May 13, 1921, Angelo J. Taranto was born in his parents’ home at 57 Floral Street, Newton Highlands. He attended Hyde Elementary, Weeks Junior High, and Newton High. He left school before graduating 10th grade in order to help support his family. He along with his father grew fruit and vegetables and sold them in and around Newton and in Haymarket Square in Boston. Angelo learned at a young age how to do everything himself. He became the family repairmen and would do anything for everyone. He was the carpenter, electrician, plumber, TV and car repairman, and gardener. There was nothing that he could not do or repair. As a self-taught individual, Angelo was always enthusiastic about teaching others his gained knowledge.
Angelo married his sweetheart, Anna on June 14, 1942 and he would tell you today that he was a lucky man and was happily married for 73 years, 7 months and 8 days. Although he spent most of his life in Newton, in 2007 he moved to Willow Crossing in Mansfield, MA. There he quickly became friends with everyone.
When World War II began, he was drafted into the Army. On January 1, 1943, he along with others from Newton left Newton City Hall and headed to Fort Devens in Ayer, Massachusetts and then onto basic training at Camp Gordon, Augusta, Georgia. He was assigned to Company “C” 789th Military Police Battalion. Through most of the war he served state side in Chicago, Illinois, primarily at Union Station. However, for part of his enlistment, he was reassigned to the 155th Military Policy Prisoner of War detachment and headed to Oran, North Africa. There he was assigned to guard Italian prisoners. He reached the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged on February 6, 1946. He was very proud of his service to his Country. He would tell you that he was very fortunate to have been in the Army and to have served as a Military Policeman. He earned the following medals and ribbons: Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Meritorious Unit Award.
In 1946, he began working for the Boston Elevated Railway, later the name was changed to the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA). In 1980, after 34 years of dedicated service, he retired. During his distinguished career with the MBTA, he worked as a Collector, Motorman, and Tower Man.
He was an active member of the Boston Carmen’s Union Local #589 and was the Director of the MBTA Pensioners Club for several years. He was also an active member of the Newton American Legion Post 440 and the Veterans of Foreign War, Post 1538.
Funeral services will be from the Burke & Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington St., (Rte. 16), West Newton, Wednesday at 11:15 am, followed by a Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church, 1321 Centre St., Newton Centre at 12:30 pm. Visiting hours will be Tuesday evening from 4:00 - 8:00 pm. He will be buried beside his loving son, Richard and son-in-law, William in the Newton Cemetery.
