Marguerite A. Rupp (York) of Wellesley died peacefully on Monday, September 29, 2014. She was 98. Beloved wife of the late Captain Lewis A. Rupp, US Navy. Loving mother of Robert T. Rupp of Plymouth, MA; Barbara Hutchins of Plymouth, MA; Geri Payne of Needham, MA; Judie Kehl of Berwick, ME; and Marilyn Veltrop of Soquel, CA. Doting grandmother of Debbie, Beth, Chris and Jennifer; and great-grandmother of 5.
Born July 29, 1916, in Greenville, GA, Mrs. Rupp was raised in Farmville, VA and was a graduate of Longwood College, VA.
Married in 1939, Captain and Mrs. Rupp traveled extensively and established homes in many different locales. While living in England, Mrs. Rupp had the pleasure of witnessing the coronation procession of Queen Elizabeth II. The couple settled in Wellesley in 1958, where Mrs. Rupp became active in many local organizations. An avid gardener and nature lover, she was a member of the Wellesley Garden Study Group. She was an active member of the Wellesley Congregational (Village) Church. Past president of the Village Church Women, Mrs.Rupp was instrumental in organizing many of the Church’s successful rummage sales.
After the death of her husband in 1977, Mrs. Rupp joined the administrative staff of the Wellesley Centers for Women at Wellesley College, one of the largest gender-focused research-and-action organizations in the world. She continued to work at the Center into her mid 90’s. In recognition of her long service and contributions, Mrs. Rupp was honored at a retirement party in 2006.
Family and Friends are invited to attend a memorial celebration, Saturday, October 4 at 11 AM at the Wellesley Congregational (Village) Church, 2 Central St. Wellesley. Funeral and burial services were private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Rupp’s memory may be made to Wellesley Congregational Church, 2 Central St. Wellesley.
