Obituary for M. Margaret "Peg" Read (Wallace)

M. Margaret "Peg" Read (Wallace)
Read (Wallace), Martha Margaret (Peg), 78, a longtime Newton resident, passed away on September 8, 2014. Peg was born to William and Mildred Wallace in New Castle, Indiana in 1936. She attended college at Western Michigan University, graduating in 1958. She went on to complete her Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology at the University of Wisconsin in 1961, and then moved east, having fallen in love with Cape Cod, the Kennedys, and New England. She eventually met and married Robert Read, and moved to Auburndale, Massachusetts where she remained until shortly before her death. Throughout her life, Peg was devoted to the field of speech pathology. In her career, she held positions at Worcester State College, the Lahey Clinic, Tufts University, and Clarke Middle School in Lexington, MA. She also maintained a private practice. She held numerous offices within the American and Massachusetts Speech, Language, and Hearing Associations, and never lost her passion for working with clients. Peg also was a talented pianist, photographer, and poet, an avid reader, a dog lover, and a close follower of politics. She was preceded in death by her sister, Kathie Wallace. She is survived by her two daughters, Jennifer and Laurie, sons-in-law Craig (Colder) and Charlie (Woods), her ex-husband, Robert, and her three grandchildren, Amelia, Charlotte, and Piper. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, September 25, from 5:00-8:30 p.m. at the Burke & Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington Street, West Newton. A memorial service celebrating her life will then be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 26th at the Second Church of Newton, 60 Highland St., Newton, MA. Burial plans are private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Speech–Language–Hearing Association (ASHA), 2200 Research Boulevard, Rockville, MD 20850.
